A Houston area man was found guilty of making threats to injure U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz by a federal judge on Monday.
24-year-old Issac Ambe Nformangum was found guilty of one count of interstate communications with a threat to injure. The incident dates back to June 26, 2022, when Nformangum threatened to injure and kill Cruz in a lengthy voicemail he left with the senator’s office, according to court documents.
“It is a civic duty of every American citizen or resident to see to it that every last one of your colleagues is to be killed,” Nformangum said in the voicemail.
In the voicemail, the man said Cruz and “every last one of [his] Republican colleagues” would be tracked down “be it by finding you in a public space or by trailing you to your very public homes. The addresses of which are public knowledge.”
A search of law enforcement databases revealed the name associated with the phone number left on the voicemail. Nformangum was arrested at his home on June 28, 2022 for making a terroristic threat to Cruz, according to court documents.
“Nformangum called the office of a U.S. senator and made threatening comments,” U.S. Attorney Alamdar Hamdani said in a press release. “It was a frightening call.”
“This is never acceptable, and the Southern District of Texas will always seek to hold actors like Nformangum to account for their actions, to deter others like him, to protect the rule of law and to ensure a safe environment for all public servants,” he said.
The 1965 Civil Rights Act was used to form the basis of Noformangum’s threats against Cruz, according to documents.

A judge set Nformangum’s sentencing for Oct. 2, and he could face up to five years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine. He will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
“You can criticize, refute and disagree with someone’s political view or vote, but you don’t get to threaten an elected official with violence just because you don’t like their political platform,” FBI Houston field office agent Douglas Williams said in a statement.
“Those actions are not protected under the Constitution,” he said. “On the contrary, as Mr. Nformangum found out, they’re a crime.”
