Astros roster analysis: Right field. Cam Smith a work in progress at the plate
Houston's 23-year-old right fielder hit 21 homers and earned a Gold Glove finalist nod, but his .210 average points to room for growth. Cam Smith, a 23-year-old right fielder for the Houston Astros, has only one season left before he becomes eligible for salary arbitration. He is also set to be PPI-eligible for a third and final season in 2027, meaning the Astros would receive an extra draft pick if he were to finish in the top three in AL MVP voting next year. Smith, who played in 32 minor-league games before being named Houston's opening day right fielder in 2025, has yet to make an at-bat at Triple-A. His development is ongoing at a level where results are required and every move is highly scrutinized. Despite two seasons with an 88 OPS-plus, Smith is considered among the top defensive right fielders in the sport.
