TEA changes location to Delmar Stadium for third community meeting on HISD takeover

TEA changes location to Delmar Stadium for a third community meeting on HISD takeover. The Texas Education Agency has changed the location of its third community meeting to Delmar Stadium for the third time, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The meetings are intended to answer questions and assuage concerns from HISD parents, students, staff and teachers regarding the takeover process, which will replace the current elected board of trustees with a state-appointed board of managers. The board is expected to be appointed by June 1. The initial meetings consisted of shouting matches and a whirlwind of emotions from attendees, but two more are planned for the coming week. U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and 26 other members of Congress have called on the federal government to intervene in the takeover, calling it a "violation of the civil rights of the students of HISD."

As the Texas Education Agency commences its takeover of the Houston Independent School District, a venue change to Delmar Sadium was announced for the third community meeting.

Scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the meeting was initially supposed to take place at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. It will now be held at the athletic facility at 2020 Mangum.

The meetings are intended to answer questions and assuage concerns from HISD parents, students, staff and teachers regarding the takeover process, which will replace the current elected board of trustees with a state-appointed board of managers. HISD Superintendent Millard House II will also be replaced with a state appointee. Applications for the board of managers will be accepted by the state through April. The board is expected to be appointed by June 1. All applicants must live within HISD boundaries, according to TEA officials. The TEA has held two community meetings thus far, and two more are planned for the coming week. The initial meetings — at Chavez and Westbury high schools — consisted of shouting matches and a whirlwind of emotions from attendees. Neither TEA commissioner Mike Morath nor Texas Gov. Greg Abbott were present for either meeting. U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee appeared at the first meeting on March 21 at Westbury High School and told attendees she would take their questions directly to Morath. Jackson Lee and 26 other members of Congress have called on the federal government to intervene in the takeover, calling it a "violation of the civil rights of the students of HISD." After the hearing Wednesday, another one is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday inside Kashmere High School's auditorium.
