HOUSTON, TEXAS: A teenager thought he had zeroed in on an easy target when he tried to rob a handicapped military veteran. Instead, he got a reality check when he was shot multiple times by the veteran who was carrying a firearm, police said. The incident occurred in downtown Houston, Texas near the intersection of Main Street and Pierce Street near the Downtown Transit Center at about 9 pm on Monday, March 27.

According to the Houston Police Department, the 18-year-old suspect ran up to the wheel-chair bound veteran and tried to steal his bag as he was heading to the transit center. "He is a veteran and he was in the area to catch a metro back to his residence," said Lieutenant JP Horelica to KPRC-TV.

What happened to the teenager robber?

Police said the veteran shot the teenage robber multiple times after he pulled out a firearm. "Suspect ran several hundred yards where he collapsed and was picked up by the Houston Fire Department, treated and transported to a local area hospital," Horelica added. However, the robber is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. The veteran stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigators.

Will the teenager face any charges?

Although nothing has been confirmed by the authorities, they said that the robber is apparently well enough to speak with them that they will file charges.

Of late, a "relentless wave" of robberies have forced the business owners in Houston to sleep in their businesses while armed in order to deter crime. The city also witnessed a horrific crime recently when an Asian woman was left paralyzed after she was body slammed during a robbery.

MEAWW previously reported that two Houston teenagers, Joseph Harrell and Nika Ayesha Woods, were arrested for the 'jugging' robbery of a Houston woman, Nhung Truong, that left her paralyzed. The arrests of the two suspects were announced at a press conference on March 17. On February 13, single mother-of-three Truong was violently attacked in a robbery in front of a shopping center in Bellaire. For the unversed, 'jugging' happens when culprits follow a customer exiting a shop, often a high-end one, to rob them of their valuables. Surveillance footage showed Truong walking in front of the shopping center before a black male in his 20s, wearing a red, white, and black sweatshirt paired with dark shorts, and sneakers, grabbed Truong who had recently withdrawn an estimated $4,300 in cash from a Bank of America ATM for a planned trip to see her family in Vietnam.

The attack caused Truong to drop her belongings. After that, the man grabbed what he thought was an envelope of money before escaping from the spot. Seconds later, after realizing that he had picked up the wrong item, the suspect returned, picked Truong up and violently slammed her to the ground. He then grabbed the actual envelope of cash before fleeing the scene again.
