In a sudden jolt on the Southwest Freeway, a Volkswagen's attempt at a lane change ended fatally when it collided with an Alief Independent School District school bus, Houston police reported on Saturday. The crash, occurring at approximately 6:10 p.m. in the 6500 block of Southwest Freeway, resulted in the death of a 44-year-old man, the driver of the Volkswagen.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the man was maneuvering southbound, possibly aiming for an exit ramp, when his car clipped a Toyota, slid out of control, and struck the rear of the school bus. In the aftermath, the man's car was wedged partially beneath the bus before slamming into a concrete barrier, Houston police spokesman John Cannon told the publication.

The bus was carrying 22 students who had attended an out-of-city event, and thankfully, all students and the bus driver emerged from the collision unharmed, an Alief ISD spokesperson informed ABC13. The man driving the Volkswagen, however, was pronounced dead at the scene, and his two adult passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

This accident comes in the wake, of a harrowing collision the previous day where a cement truck veered into a school bus on the outskirts of Austin, resulting in the death of a young boy and a man in another vehicle. The back-to-back incidents have stirred concerns about road safety, particularly involving school transport. Southbound lanes of Highway 59 were shut down following the accident.
