The day, March 26, is a reminder that 38.4 million Americans, or approximately 11.6% of the U.S. population, have diabetes, with 8.7 million unaware they have it. Approximately 97.6 million people ages 18 or older have prediabetes, a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to diagnose as diabetes, and over 8 in 10 adults with predi diabetes don't know they've it. The new Diabetes Risk Test can determine the risk of prediabetic or type 2 diabetes, using simple questions about weight, age, family history, and other potential risks.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Tuesday, March 26 is Diabetes Alert Day. The American Diabetes Association explained it’s a one-day “wake-up call” that focuses on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of understanding your risk.

To bring awareness about Diabetes Alert Day, Dr. Carol Nwelue at Baylor Scott & White Health answered our medical questions about diabetes.

The numbers tell the story of diabetes in America

• 38.4 million Americans—or about 11.6% of the U.S. population—have diabetes.

• 8.7 million Americans are unaware that they have diabetes.

• Approximately 97.6 million people ages 18 or older have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

• More than 8 in 10 adults living with prediabetes don’t know they have it.

• About half of women with gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that women develop when they are pregnant.

How you can determine your risk of type 2 diabetes

The new Diabetes Risk Test asks users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risks for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Preventative tips are provided for everyone who takes the test.
