HOUSTON — The Texas State is shooting for the stars, quite literally, with the establishment of the Texas Space Commission. Governor Greg Abbott announced at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, outlining plans to bolster Texas' role as a leader in the burgeoning space industry. The commission, which will foster innovation in space exploration and commercial aerospace opportunities, aims to ensure the state's dominance in civil, commercial, and military aerospace sectors.

According to the Office of the Texas Governor, the commission will be overseen by a nine-member Board of Directors responsible for administering a new research fund to strengthen Texas' aerospace leadership. "Texas is the launchpad for Mars, innovating the technology that will colonize humanity’s first new planet," said Governor Abbott, emphasizing the state's historical connection to manned spaceflight, stemming from President John F. Kennedy's 1962 moon speech at Rice University.

The commission's creation, part of a legislative effort to maintain Texas's advantage in the highly competitive space sector, has drawn the attention of state leaders and industry magnates. "Texas is and will continue to be the epicenter for the space industry across the globe," Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said, underscoring the state's pioneering legacy in space exploration, as per the Office of the Texas Governor.

The Texas Aerospace Research and Space Economy Consortium (TARSEC), working in tandem with the commission, will pinpoint research opportunities to further advance the state in aeronautics and space development. The TARSEC Executive Committee is comprised of representatives from higher education institutions across Texas, who will guide the state's research and funding initiatives in space enterprises. "With the creation of the Texas Space Commission, we will ensure that Texas companies and researchers lead the way in the development and exploration of space," pledged Senator Huffman in a show of support for the state's commitment to industry innovation, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.

Industry and academia are well represented on both the Texas Space Commission Board of Directors and TARSEC, with appointees like Gwen Griffin, CEO of Griffin Communications Group, John Shannon, VP at Boeing, and Dr. Robert Ambrose, a professor at Texas A&M University, among others.
