Service-focused vending machines raise $1 million for Texas, international charities

Nearly $1 million is headed back into Texas charities thanks to the donates facilitated by the Light the World Giving Machine, an initiative by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The machines were located in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. In Houston, the Giving Machines raised almost $190,000. Donations were presented locally to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, and Sole Mission. The most popular donations included 354 pair of underwear for children in Houston. 100% of the donations will go to the designated charities.

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Nearly $1 million is headed back into Texas charities thanks to the donates facilitated by the Light the World Giving Machine, an initiative by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales helped present donations to local and international charities during the check presentation ceremony Monday.

During the 2023-24 holiday season, the Giving Machine vending machines raised nearly $1 million to help those in need. Giving Machines were located in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston.

These Giving Machines provided a unique opportunity for Texas families to make a difference in the lives of others while creating lasting memories during the holiday season.

In Houston, the Giving Machines raised nearly $190,000. Donations were presented locally to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the Houston ToolBank, and Sole Mission. Contributions were also awarded to international charities including the American Red Cross, African Girls Hope and Church World Service.

More than 200 volunteers from around Houston staffed the Giving Machines and provided 1,500 hours of service. Conservatory Food Hall in downtown Houston donated the space for the Giving Machines.

Giving Machines, which are like vending machines offer a variety of unique donation options. Other donation options also included food for a homebound senior’s pet for a month, diapers for two weeks for a single mom, feminine health products for girls in Africa, and vital vaccines.

100% of the donations received at the Giving Machines will go to the designated charities.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pays for all administrative, logistical, and advertising costs so that all the proceeds can go directly to the designated charities.
