Kyrie Irving hounded by Rockets in return, held in check in Mavs' blowout loss
With the Rockets focused on trapping him, Kyrie Irving was held to 15 points in his first regular-season game since March 2025 and the Mavs fell 128-110. The Houston Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 128-110 in the NBA season opener, marking the largest halftime deficit in a head coach's first game with a team in NBA history. The Rockets' defense prioritized Kyrie Irving, who had been out of a full season due to a knee injury, as its top priority. The Mavericks' transition defense was particularly poor, giving up 20 fast-break points in the first half alone. Despite this, coach Dusty May acknowledged that the team let go of their principles and allowed the game to close.
