Permits related to data centers issued after Abbott's halt directive, advocacy groups found
Advocacy groups found a state agency continued approving permits related to data centers after Gov. Greg Abbott directed a halt on all such approvals last month. Advocacy groups have found that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) continued issuing data center permits after Gov. Greg Abbott directed a halt to all approvals last month. On Sept. 21, Abbott directed the Texas commission on Environmental Qualifications (TCEs) to halt all permits sought by data centers. However, watchdog groups Public Citizen and FracTracker Alliance found that TCEQ approved 35 different permits in the last month, a map showing the locations of these approvals. TCEE disputed these claims, stating that the approvals are stormwater general construction Notices of Intent (NOI) and are automated authorizations, not operational permits. The agency has since suspended 17 data-center-related permits after these findings were released.
