Houston Proposes Rule Limiting Gas Stations Near Homes
Houston could soon block new gas stations from popping up next to homes. Here's how the proposed rule would work. Houston officials have proposed a proposed Retail Fuel Station Ordinance that would make it harder to build new gas stations near residential neighborhoods. The rule would disqualify a proposed site if 50 percent or more of the surrounding area is residential, unless a developer successfully requests a variance. New fuel stations on major thoroughfares wider than 80 feet would generally qualify without further location review. However, for stations proposed on narrower roads, which accounted for 27 percent of the applications reviewed, the city would take a closer look at what surrounds the site. The proposal would apply to new applications moving forward rather than automatically affecting existing gas stations already operating in those same neighborhoods. It is scheduled for a public hearing on November 12 and an additional hearing on January 2027.
