After push, Houston ISD files request for federal disaster relief
The state's largest school district is one of many throughout the Houston region that was hit in the storm and left with severe damage. Houston ISD officials have submitted a request for federal aid relief funding for recovery efforts from the deadly derecho storm in May. The request was confirmed by state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles, who emailed state lawmakers to confirm it to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This follows a push from ten state representatives, who all serve the Houston area, urging the district to consider federal financial relief as they prepare to ask voters for a $4.4 billion bond, one of the largest requested by a school district in Texas history. The district is currently in the process of rebuilding and recovering from the May 16, 2024 storm.

Houston ISD officials have submitted a request for federal aid relief funding to support recovery efforts from the deadly derecho storm in May.
According to an email sent to Chron, state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles emailed state lawmakers on Monday to confirm he submitted an official request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The school district confirmation email comes after ten state representatives, who all serve the Houston area, pushed for the state's largest school district to consider federal financial relief as they prepare to ask voters to approve a proposed $4.4 billion bond in November one of the largest requested by a school district in Texas history.
"Dear elected officials, thank you for your interest in our schools and students," Miles wrote in a letter addressed to lawmakers on Monday. "Like many in our community, HISD is still in the process of rebuilding and recovering from the May 16, 2024 storm. The HISD risk management team submitted the Request for Public Assistance (RPA) to DR-4781-TX to FEMA. HISD will leverage the district property insurance policy and FEMA for any reimbursement towards the deductible or other claims as needed."
"I look forward to continuing to work with you to make sure all HISD students have a safe environment to learn and thrive," Miles added.
President Joe Biden declared Harris County was eligible for federal aid on May 18 after the unexpected derecho storm swept across Texas's southern region, killing eight Houston residents and leaving one million county residents without power. The catastrophic storm left many local school districts, including Houston ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and Channelview ISD, among others, with severe damage. District officials said a large chunk of the bond funds will be allocated to renovations and improving campuses.
