NOAA's latest Houston winter forecast is here. What a super could El Niño bring.
Forecasters say an unusually strong jet stream shift is heading straight for the Gulf. NOAA's winter outlook, released on Oct. 15, suggests that Houston could be in for a wetter-than-normal few months due to the El Niño, which is expected to continue through January, February and March 2027. The Climate Prediction Center predicts an 80 percent chance of a strong El Niño continuing through January and February, with the event expected to peak during the November-through-January period. This could mean more opportunities for rain and storms in Houston. However, NOAA is not predicting unusually cold weather in Houston, as its temperature outlook gives equal chances of above-average seasonal temperatures across the Southwest and parts of the southern Plains. However there is a potential consequence for Texas, potentially leading to drought. The agency's next three-month outlook is scheduled for Nov. 19.
