Allies in Hope loses nearly $500K in HIV prevention funding
The Houston nonprofit Allies in Hope is facing federal funding cuts that reduce HIV testing, education and staffing as it prepares for its annual gala. Allies in Hope, a Houston-based HIV prevention organization, has lost nearly $500,000 in funding dedicated to HIV testing and education. The federal government has shifted HIV prevention funding away from directly funded community organizations and towards state and local health departments. This has resulted in the loss of one full-time employee and reduced testing capacity. Despite this, the organization continues offering HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, preventive medications, rapid-start HIV treatment and connections to long-term care. The organization also operates its Stone Soup Food Pantry, providing food and household essentials to anyone experiencing food insecurity, regardless of HIV status. The fourth annual Hope for Houston Ball will raise money for Allies in Hope's programs.
