Fort Bend County approves Tesla deal that could give the company 35 years of tax breaks
For the first time, Fort Bend County taxpayers got to see how much the county is willing to give up to attract a Tesla solar site. Fort Bend County, Texas, has approved a deal with Tesla that could give the company 35 years of tax breaks. The agreement was approved by a 4-0 vote, with interim County Judge Daniel Wong abstaining due to his business relationship with the company. The proposed site is located near Rosenberg. If Tesla employs 12,000 workers for two years in the first 10 years, the company would receive an additional five years of free tax breaks, with equipment taxes completely waived and 90% of inventory taxes waived. While Tesla would still pay property taxes, it may not have to pay 90% on inventory for years 11 to 30. The county's economic director, Carlos Guzman, said the deal had to approve to stay in the running for the project.
