Houston rolls out an old-school, candy-red Cadillac. It’s college football pageantry done right

Slabs have been part of Houston’s culture for decades. Now the Cougars are honoring the tradition during their pregame walkout. Houston's new associate athletic director, Alundis Pledge, has created a unique college football entrance for the Houston Cougars, using a 1979 Cadillac LeCabriolet as the entry vehicle. The idea came from Pledge, who is from Mississippi and studied sports management at Texas A&M and Lamar University in Beaumont. The team's entrance was inspired by iconic team entrances, such as "Enter Sandman" at Virginia Tech, "Ralphie's Run" at Colorado, and "Chief Osceola" at Florida State. In Houston car culture, slabs are a classic, big-bodied sedan with candy paint, chrome spoked wheels, refinished interiors, elaborate sound systems in the trunk and a fifth wheel on the vehicle’s rear. The reaction to this hyperlocal runout suggests that the Cougars are on their way to creating one of their own.
