Diller Scofidio + Renfro Reimagines the Humble Metal Shed as an Arts Hub at Rice University

The firm's Sarofim Hall replaces the lost, legendary Art Barn in Houston. Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has reimagined the Humble Metal Shed at Rice University in Houston, Texas, as a new visual and performing arts hub at Susan and Fayez Sarofim Hall, a 94,000-square-foot visual and musical hub designed by the New York firm. The new structure, which evokes the pre-engineered steel-framed “Butler buildings” that are ubiquitous across South Texas, was built in 1969 for the exhibition of The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age from the Museum of Modern Art at the Museum in New York. The Humble metal shed, which housed art studios and exhibitions for nearly five decades, was demolished in 2014 due to the mounting costs of upkeep and repairs. DS+R won an international competition to design a new arts building that would replace the Art Barn and occupy its site. The three-story SarofIM Hall combines a Butler building typology with a pedestrian pathway, or breezeway, bisecting the long-span steel rafters, bisected the long span structure. The project was led by DS+RF partner Charles Renfros, a native Texan and alumnus who received bachelor's degrees in both art and architecture from Rice.
