NOAA issues winter forecast warning as strong El Niño targets Houston

Forecasters say an unusually strong jet stream shift is heading straight for the Gulf. NOAA's winter outlook, released Oct. 15, indicates that Houston could be in for a wetter-than-normal few months due to a strong El Niño. The Climate Prediction Center predicts an 80 percent chance of a strong Niño continuing through January, February and March 2027, with the event expected to peak during the November-through-January period. This could mean more opportunities for rain and storms in Houston. However, NOAA's temperature outlook gives equal chances of above-, near- or below-normal seasonal temperatures for the Southwest and parts of the southern Plains. The agency's drought outlook predicts drought conditions to improve or worsen across the Southern Great Plains by the end of January, but warns that too much rainfall on dry soil can lead to destructive flash floods and mudslides.
